10 Helpful Books for College Grads

Books are one of my favorite gifts. Of course, I also love receiving them. 🙂

A friend of mine recently asked if I had any good recommendations for a graduation gift and well, a couldn’t help but suggest a book.

I decided to put together a list of some of my favorite books for graduating college students. All of these books provide useful information about what you need to know after you graduate from college. These books are full of common sense and advice that you will benefit them throughout their lives.

Listed in no particular order, let’s dive in.

Awesome books every college grad should read

1. The ABC’s of Adulthood

You don’t always need to give a deep, thought provoking book. Help your grad relearn their ABC’s with this witty book all about becoming an adult.

Filled with street style photography, the ABCs of Adulthood shares writer Deborah Copakens’ advice on learning to face life as a full fledged adult. This 72 page book is a quick read so your grad might actually make their way all the way through it. Order a copy here.

2. Do your Laundry or You’ll Die Alone

As a busy parent there’s probably a thing or two you forgot to teach your child before they left the house. This great read is there to pick up those missing tidbits of advice.

If your child is anything like my brother (brilliant but lacking any common sense), this book is the perfect gift. Becky Blade wrote this book for her own daughter who was leaving the nest.

3. The Girls Guide

This entertaining book is the perfect gift for any women leaving college and heading off into the corporate world. Melissa Kirsch is the all knowing best friend you always go to for advice.

From cleaning up your digital reputation to dating to ethics, this book covers everything. If you’ve got a young women in your life whose a bit uncertain about life this is the perfect gift. Order this book here.

4. Seussisms

No list of college graduation books would be complete without at least one Dr. Seuss book. Full of helpful advice, this book is the perfect book gift for the college grad that doesn’t do a ton of reading.

5. Perform Under Pressure Book

Graduating college and entering the job market can be an extremely stressful time in life. Once you have that first job however the stress justt continues as you seek to impress your new boss.

6. The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke

Suze Orman is known for her incredible work in the world of personal finance. When young adults first graduate college the world of personal finance can be a bit of a mystery to them, I know it was for me. Trying to understand what a 401K was, how to select the right health insurance, and selecting the right investments was a total mystery.

In this helpful book Orman gives you the breakdown on navigating all of these and so much more. She covers:

This book is absolutely a must have for every college graduate, I wish I had had it when I graduated. I would have spent so much less time trying to Google all of my questions.

7. Surely You’re Joking

Richard Feynman was a Nobel prize-winning physicist. Now, don’t let that scare you away from this book; it’s anything but boring.

Feynman was known for being an exceedingly curious man. As such, he lived a life filled with adventures. While this book reads like a series of tales from his life there are deep truths and life lessons woven throughout.

8. If this Isn’t Nice What Is?

You’ve probably read at least one of Kurt Vonneguts’ books. If you haven’t your graduate most assuredly has. Mostly known for his many novels, Mr. Vonnegut also gave many commencement speeches, despite himself never having graduated from college.

Mr. Vonneguts’ uncle, enjoying a pleasant afternoon, would often say to him “If this isn’t nice, what is?” So often in life we are so busy focusing on other things we fail to find happiness in the here and now. 9. Grit

This fascinating book is currently a bestseller on Amazon as well as a New York Times bestseller. This book discusses the power of passion and perseverance.

In this book author Angela Duckworth explains why some people succeed and others fail. It takes a special quality she calls grit, a mix of passion and persistence. The book is filled with annecdotes and stories of people who exhibit this quality along with a few tips on how to go about using it in your own life.

10. There is Life After College

If you or your grad has posed the question, “Why is the transition to post-college life so difficult for many recent graduates?” this is the book for you.

This book is great for current college student, recent graduates, and even parents of a college student. Landing that first job after college can be quite difficult. This book aims to be a blueprint any recent student can follow to make sure they have the skills companies are looking for.
